The mid to late twentieth century has seen numerous advances in both science and technology which provided us with a wide range of modern furniture.

Noteable designers of this period used modern design as a vehicle for social change. Consequently, the furniture designs bore a strong emphasis on durable, functional furniture which could be readily mass produced. New materials, like fiberglass, plastic and chrome, were being used to create a unique line of tables, chairs and sofas. Many of these classic furniture designs are still being produced today.

Yet, these advances would not have been possible without the efforts of forward-thinking architects and designers.

Innovative individuals, such as Charles and Ray Eames, Arne Jacobeson, Le Corbusier, Eileen Gray and Eero Saarinen are now considered being the top chair designers of all time.

Charles and Ray Eames

Charles Eames, Jr. (1907-78) and Bernice “Ray” Eames (née Kaiser) (1912-88) were an American husband and wife design team whose artistic styling represented America’s defining social movements from the economy’s shift from manufacturing goods to producing information, and the globalization of American culture.

Early in their careers, the Eameses’ recognized the American demand for affordable, high-quality furniture.

As a result, their design conveyed an ethos of functionality and affordability.

One of their most memorable creations was the two-piece Eames lounge chair with separate panels for the back and seat, which was unveiled to the public in the mid-1940s. Variations of this design are still being produced in factories around the world for stadiums, airports and schools. They would later go on to pioneer technologies, such as plastic resin chairs, fibreglass and wire mesh chairs designed for Herman Miller. ;

Arne Jacobsen

Arne Jacobsen (1902-71) was a Danish architect and designer who was best known for making prototypes for textiles, furniture, wallpaper, etc. Jacobsen’s work has been described as being an invaluable contribution to both modernism and to the specific place the Scandinavian countries had in the modern movement. Jacobsen was known for his numerous contributions towards architectural functionalism, which was reflected in both his buildings and his furniture designs.

Many of Jacobsen’s designs are noted for their sense of proportion which conveyed its own sense of symmetry paired with delicate simplicity. The most notable examples of his work are the ant chair (1952), egg chair (1958), and the Series 7 chairs.

Le Corbusier

Charles-Édouard Jeanneret (1887-1965) also known as Le Corbusier, was a Swiss designer, urbanist and architect. Le Corbusier began to experiment with furniture design in the late 1920s, after inviting fellow architect, Charlotte Perriand, to join his studio. The duo then began designing furniture according to the principles Le Corbusier had outlined in his book ;L’Art Décoratif d’aujourd’hui ;. Their designs reflected three types of furniture types: type-needs, type-furniture, and human-limb objects.

The initial products of their collaboration produced tubular chrome-plated chairs, and a line of furniture which later became the Salon d’Automne installation. The most well-known of these chairs are the LC-1, LC-2, LC-3 and LC-4.

Eileen Gray

Kathleen Eileen Moray Gray (1878-1976) was an Irish architect and furniture designer. Gray was born into an aristocratic family and was encouraged to pursue her artistic interests from an early age. She began working with lacquer after having discovered a repair shop in London. Shortly afterward, she began to make lacquered folding screens which were displayed at the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs. The screens received critical acclaim and brought Gray numerous commissions. The most prominent of these commissions was to redecorate a flat in the rue de Lota belonging to Madame Mathieu Lévy.

Gray’s style was strongly influenced by contemporary architecture. As a result, she subsequently began to design minimalistic, functional furniture. Gray designed a majority of the apartment’s carpets, lamps and furniture, including her famous Bidenbum Chair. The Bindenum Chair gained Gray much recognition because of its elegant interpretation of modern aesthetic.

Eero Saarinen

Eero Saarinen (1910-61) was a Finnish American architect and designer who became famous for his ability to change his design style according to the needs of the project. Saarinen first received recognition for his furniture design when he received first prize for a chair he created with Charles Eames for the 1940 “Organic Design in Home Furnishings” competition. Saarinen would later go on to design the Tulip chair which was made to match a complementary dining table.

The Tulip chair was considered revolutionary at the time for its futuristic appearance. Many considered the Tulip chair to be “space age” for its use of artificial materials and use of curves. The Tulip chair was also featured on the original ;Star Trek ;(1966-69) television series.

Jonathan is a fan of great design and has written extensively about all modern classics from Eames lounge chairs to Barcelona chairs

If you’re a graphic designer, people naturally assume that ideas are constantly bursting out of you, kind of like a champagne out of a just-popped bottle. While it is true that you know what looks good and what does not, you may not always have the ideas you need ready to create on the computer screen.

Sometimes you just need a little inspiration to get you going in the right direction. Thankfully, some super smart people created the internet a while ago, which enabled some other smart graphic designers to create some websites that help you with your inspiration need.

Designspiration

Designspiration.net, if you couldn’t tell by its self-descriptive name, was created to provide design inspiration. The sites vision is to have a “diverse selection of high quality, user-submitted images as a means of sharing inspiration.” It succeeds in its goal. In my opinion, this is the best site for finding the widest variety of excellent design projects.

Each day, many posts are added to the site showcasing user creations. Some types of projects include packaging, album covers, print ads, branding and logos, limited photography, lettering, and much more.

Anyone can use the site to find inspiration. However, in order to post on the site, a designer must submit a link to their online portfolio for review. Upon approval, a user can comment on others’ design, and share their work.

Dribbble

Dribbble.com is a “show and tell [site] for designers.” The site is basketball-themed (not quite sure why) and has a structure built around sharing. On Dribbble, Players, who are drafted/invited from existing members can share and comment on others’ shots (uploaded designs). A spectator is anyone who comes to view the site and find inspiration—they cannot post or comment. Lastly, prospects are spectators who have asked to be drafted.

Not only will spectators find traditional forms of inspiration, but they’ll also stumble across a lot design elements created for iPhone apps, internet games, websites, and user interfaces. The site encourages feedback, which helps designers perfect their work.

The site takes a step beyond show and tell, and lets users find designers for hire based on skills and location, search for open jobs, and collaborate on work together.

Behance

Similar to Designspiration and Dribbble, Behance.net lets users share their work with other designers. Users can filter the website through a large amount of subjects, including advertising, branding, caricatures, caligraphy, crafts, costume design, photography, jewelry design, video effects, and much, much more.

Behance also has a section for finding and filling jobs. Additionally, Behance has a blog called The 99%, which gives tips for turning your ideas into reality. Action Method, an app created by Behance, is a task management program design specifically for creatives and helps users stay on track with their projects.

Lost Type Co-Op

Losttype.com is not your average inspiration site. Rather, it is a site where you can pay whatever amount you want, from free to a $692.34 if you were feeling generous, for distributing designer-created fonts. New fonts are added about once a week and with it comes a digital poster to advertise the font. These posters showcase each font and are often fun and creative, providing small yet, ample inspiration.

Lost Type has created a blog that showcases its fonts in action. For example, ESPN, the NBA, coffee shops, and greeting card companies have utilized fonts from this excellent resource. So, go take a look at Lost Type for some other designers’ creations—the worst that could happen is you’ll leave with some free fonts!

Serifs & Sans

Serifsandsans.com is a design blog with a simple premise executed flawlessly. Nearly everyday, awesome examples of contemporary graphic design are posted to the site. From posters, brand identities, typefaces and fonts, packaging, websites, and more, there will surly be something that appeals to everyone. What makes the site a standout is how many posts are visible all at once. Serif & Sans is a quick and easy tool for inspiration.

Business cards are cards bearing business information about a company or individual. They are shared during formal introductions as a convenience and a memory aid. A business card typically includes the giver’s name, company affiliation (usually with a logo) and contact information such as street addresses, telephone number(s), fax number, e-mail addresses and website. It can also include telex, bank account and tax code. Traditionally many cards were simple black text on white stock; today a professional business card will sometimes include one or more aspects of striking visual design.

Business card has a vital role in your business no matter what type of business and size. In order to maintain the stream and constant communication with your clients you should have your own business card that should reflect how your business run and serve.

What is QR Code?

A QR code (abbreviated from Quick Response code) is a type of matrix barcode (or two-dimensional code) first designed for the automotive industry. More recently, the system has become popular outside of the industry due to its fast readability and large storage capacity compared to traditional UPC barcodes. The code consists of black modules arranged in a square pattern on a white background. The information encoded can be made up of four standardized kinds (“modes”) of data (numeric, alphanumeric, byte/binary, Kanji), or by supported extensions virtually any kind of data.

Created by Toyota subsidiary Denso Wave in 1994to track vehicles during the manufacturing process, the QR code is one of the most popular types of two-dimensional barcodes. It was designed to allow its contents to be decoded at high speed.

So now that you know about QR code we will proceed in showcasing some of the best business card design that has QR code printed.

Do you feel like your business could easily become more profitable? Are you stuck in discovering what it is that is holding your business back? The likely factor that is holding your business back is its brand image. Do not despair, all is not lost if this is the problem. Instead, you can gain some hope in the fact that with just a bit of effort, you can revitalize your business and bring it back to life with a new logo.

A new brand logo can work wonders for your business. Just when you thought your business was dropping off the face of this earth, you can be amazed by its soaring success with a new logo. To develop a new logo for your business, simply think about the needs and wants of the audience your brand is directed at.

If your cleaning business is directed at college students, for example, you may want to take two routes in developing a new logo for your company. You first want to develop a logo that college students can trust. Just because your logo looks edgy and flashy does not mean college students will buy the services your brand offers. However, if it can combine this element with an element of trustworthiness, then your business may succeed. So many college students wish their mothers could be at their homes to do their laundry, clean the home, and cook meals. Maybe your business could soar to success with a logo of a mother in a superhero costume. The “superhero” element would appeal to the sense of humor and excitement that every college student loves. On the other hand, the logo of a mother would appeal to the genuine need and desire that college students have for the work their mothers did as they were children.

Building a logo requires simply being thoughtful about your business. Be sure to set aside at least an hour to consider the different ways your business can build its brand with social media. Social media has become an imperative part in the success of any business. You need to know how to manage the different social media outlets out there.

Instead of rushing to become as profitable as possible, simply take a moment to consider the needs and wants of your audience. As you do so, you will be building a brand that genuinely appeals to your audience and looks authentic. One of the reasons many brands do not become successful is for their lack of authenticity. When an audience can pick up on a lack of authenticity, it turns them off. Try to be as real and authentic as possible with your audience to encourage the profitability and success of your business.

When building your brand, also try to be as creative as possible. Do not feel like you always have to play by the rules. Being a bit edgy can pay off in building your brand name. Remember, the more authentic your brand is, the more likely it will soar to success in the marketplace.

High-end product and service firms around the world are constantly innovating in their approach to representing their brand online, weaving attractive web design and development around that special “something” that gets across the luxury and status associated with the label.

Whether the product is a tangible one like vintage wine or imported chocolates or a service such as events and hospitality, the developers behind the web sites of luxury offerings work hard to create beautiful, functional places for potential and existing clients alike to find the information they need while being lured in by the quality of the brand.

One of the best examples of a luxury niche requiring something extra in web design are top-of-the-line hotels in New York City, New York. With stiff competition from rival hotels, designers know that an online presence is the first step in winning potential clients over to their product. Take a look at some of these websites to get an idea of what it looks like when luxury products meet luxury web design standards (many hotels from the lists are courtesy of Luxury-Hotels.com):

1. The New York Palace

A beautiful combination of dark colors combined with excellent use of imagery make the website of the New York Palace hotel in midtown Manhattan a prime example of enticing design with a gleam of luxury. Prettiness aside, both content links and a room availability search form lie above the fold, giving visiting customers all they need at a moment’s glace and with minimal page movement.

2. The Peninsula New York

Focusing on using photographs of rooms and premises to lure potential guests, the website of The Peninsula New York hotel also features dark colors to get across its air of quality, utilizing Adobe Flash to present visitors with an immediate peek at what the hotel has to offer.

3. Hotel Giraffe

The designers behind Hotel Giraffe’s website saw fit to not only present images, availability forms and quick links above the fold but also added clean white space below for easier presentation of textual content. Visitors are given an attractive overview of any given feature of the hotel’s experience within the site’s header with more detailed information always easily accessible with a quick downward scroll.

4. The Mercer Hotel

The Mercer Hotel, a trendy set of accommodations located in New York City’s Soho district, has taken a different approach with its web presence. Instead of elegant design attributes, The Mercer focuses instead on absolute simplicity, giving potential customers the information they need with little else to distract them.

5. The James Hotel New York

Taking a middle road between overwhelming design and access to information is the website of The James Hotel. While, like its competitors, The James makes excellent use of scrolling photographs to give visitors a quick taste of what their hotel has to offer, the real focus is on the ability og customers to find the information they need and to make reservations with minimal clicks. Excellent use of sidebar placement to feature an accommodations search form makes this process easy, with top navigation links presenting an opportunity for a casual surf around the site only if desired by the visitor.

6. The Muse Hotel

The general trend of dark colors in the interest of conveying luxury continues with the website of New York City’s The Muse Hotel. Imagery was obviously a priority in designing this site and photographs play a major role throughout the inner pages, lying below only the main navigation links.

7. The Ritz-Carlton

A household name, even for those who have never stepped foot beyond its doors, is the Ritz-Carlton chain of hotels. With a brand as well known as Ritz-Carlton, the designers behind the hotel chain’s website took a road less traveled and one not seen previously in this list by maintaining a light color scheme and wide online interface. Like many of the other websites featured, photographs reign supreme here, with images used to convey the luxurious potential of rooms, events, food and premises.

It is all too easy in the digital age that we live in to write off many traditional business and marketing techniques like direct mail, face to face interactions, and business cards. Digital marketing and e-commerce have changed the playing field but have not changed the rules. Business cards are a great way to establish relationships and remind potential clients of your services in the future. Below are many ways to make your business card stand out in the 21st century.

1) Use new technology like QR codes

Credit: Global X

Almost everyone has a smartphone these days. This creates a unique opportunity when it comes to making a unique business card. Leave some space on the back of the business card in the corner for a QR code (a scannable image that gives phone instructions). For example, you could place a QR code on your card that would redirect when scanned to the company website, a promotional youtube video, or even a coupon or discount. This integration of print and digital makes it possible to track business card success.

2) Unique and sleek textures stimulate memory

Credit: yuichirock

Business cards are useful but can often get lost in the crowd with dozens of other business cards competing for valuable wallet space. Find a unique texture that will make your card stand out from the rest and is pleasing to the touch. This will also help add an additional layer other than appearance to your card to help make it more memorable down the line.

3) Bump share and digital image storage

One problem with print business cards is that they are so easy to lose or just throw away. How many times have you done some house cleaning with your wallet or purse and thrown away receipts and business cards? There are many different apps on android and iPhone, like bump share technology, that allow you to either store digital business cards, or take pictures of a physical business card and save them in your phone. Business cards don’t get thrown out as much when you don’t have to physically keep up with them.

4) Include links to your social media

Credit: richardbouchez

In the olden days a business card needed a few key pieces of information; a phone number, an address, and an email address. Today, business cards need to include social media information like a linkedin account, a website, twitter accounts (if you use twitter) and other social networks that are related to your niche. This also shows potential customers that you are actively involved in more ways than one with the industry.

There are many traditional tips that still are relevant today with business cards. As always make sure that your design and message are consistent with both your personal branding and branding of the company. A great design will always be one way to “wow” potential customers and give them a reason to remember you.

BIKINI LINES is a proposed massive mixed media installation inspired by the lack of standardized nuclear disaster reporting, in particular the panic that set in over Tokyo following the March 2011 Earthquake, Tsunami and subsequent Fukushima meltdown.

And it started, the Bikini Lines funding campaign go and share fund to this most awaited project!

The Bikini Lines team which is made up of members from around the world is setting out to create the world’s largest painting using the Runit Island Cactus Dome as their canvas. The Cactus Dome is a 107m wide (350foot) dome built over a blast crater in the Marshall Islands which encases the radioactive debris from Bikini and the surrounding Atolls. The surface area of the dome is roughly 96,600 square feet and once completed will beat the current world record holder of 86,000 square feet.

Constructed by the American military between 1977-1980 it is largely forgotten but still stands as a constant reminder from a time when nuclear testing was more the norm than the exception. While declared safe long ago the island has been off-limits until now. Both the Marshallese government and the Enewetak elders have both recently given their blessing to go ahead with this project and are opening up the Island for their arrival in late 2012.

In Lieu of corporate sponsorship and the hiring of famous designers, the team has opted for a more do it yourself grassroots approach and in doing so, and is keeping this project by the people and for the people. They are both financing this project and taking artists submissions via IndiGoGo (a crowd-financing platform.) With that comes great opportunity for the public as they are not only looking for people to submit the winning design that will go on top of the dome but are seeking a director to join them and help create the accompanying documentary. Submissions will also be accepted for their official on-site photographer & writer. Not wanting to leave anyone out, the team has also added a wild card spot for the adventurous types that don’t have an artistic bone in their body but would still love an opportunity to take part in a project of this magnitude.

The entire paint job which will take between 3 and 4 weeks to complete will be documented in film & writing, with the finished product being released as a CC licensed product and 100% of the intake going to the benefit of the Fukushima Orphans.

Project creator and executive producer Christian Forestell had this to say, “We really want this project to benefit everybody involved. The artists, designer, videographer, photographer and writer who earn the chance to join us will hopefully achieve instant recognition from their work and benefit from greater career options afterwards. The Marshall Islands will gain more recognition from international media and hopefully see a boost in tourism. Most importantly, though, Fukushima orphans will benefit from media sales. 100% of the sales of our documentary will be donated to the Ashinaga Foundation, which helps orphaned children achieve their education.”

The campaign to create the world’s largest painting on the historically significant Cactus Dome will launch via IndiGoGo on February 1st 2012 and run until July 31st 2012, leaving plenty of time and opportunity for people to come up with designs, and submit their work for the chance to join the team as they embark on the Marshall Islands for an anything but ordinary world changing adventure.

Curious about what you will get in return for your pledges? Here is their full list of incentives for helping get this project off the ground

INDIEGOGO FUNDRAISING GOAL: $200,000 USD+

IndieGoGo is a great platform for this type of project, as it allows us to give you rewards for helping us out. Below is a list of incentives and rewards. You can always change your pledge amount before the deadline if you wish to give more or less.

Despite the numerous options available, choosing the right professional graphic design services for your website is not easy, especially when you’re after not only quality, but also security and affordability.

So consider the following nine tips when securing professional graphic design services.

Know what you want and what you need.
Start with thinking about the scope of your website and its requirements. Depending on these, establish the key things you expect professional graphic design services to do to your website.

Establish how much work needs to be done.
You may need graphic design services only for a landing page, or you may need them for a complete website redesign. How much work needs to be done?

Think about your audience and their demographics.
Graphic design for a children’s website will look quite different from graphic design for a surfers’ website. The color scheme, the type and size of the fonts, and the graphics used should all depend on the age and interests of your target audience.

Use a single service provider.
When there’s a lot of work to be done on your website it’s wise to use a single graphic design services provider. Why? 8 times out of 10 you’ll be able to get a discount.

Be flexible.
While it’s recommended that you do have an idea about what graphic design you want before looking for professional services, chances are the designers who will work on your website will come up with suggestions. If the suggestions sound reasonable to you, follow them.

Buy services only from providers with a portfolio.
In other words, ensure that the graphic design services provider you choose has worked with other clients before and has satisfied them. Check the provider’s portfolio to quickly test its quality.

Keep in touch with the provider you choose.
When it comes to graphic design for a website, chances are you’ll want to make regular modifications to your website in the future. Whenever you want to change the style of a certain web page or improve the design of the landing page, you’ll want to have a graphic design services provider near to help you.

Buy the services from an established provider.
If you find it difficult to establish whether a provider is secure or not, check out his website, portfolio, and accolades. Be wary of overenthusiastic testimonials. You can usually tell whether a graphic design services provider is really professional by assessing the quality of its website.

Don’t pay in advance for the services you buy.
You can offer the provider an advance before the start of the project, but don’t pay in full until the full project is completed. Professional graphic design services providers rarely demand full payment before they do the work.

To choose secure professional graphic design services, check the credibility of the provider by looking at its website, portfolio, testimonials, and accolades.
