Twitter has over 55 million updates posted to its site each day.  And, increasingly, more and more of these updates are being tagged by Geo location.  So, when someone posts an update from Penn Station in New York City if the user has Geotagging turned on – Twitter can see where the update is coming from.

Twitter has confirmed that an increasing proportion of users continue to add Geotagging to their updates.  So, in the future, as a greater proportion of status updates are tagged with Geo coordinates, and as more users continue to post status updates online – there will be rich data showing what people are saying right now at popular places.
Last month, Sency launched in several major cities including Penn Philadelphia, London, and Washington DC.  This allows people to search updates made by people inside of each city. The next step has been for Sency to show what’s being said right now in specific locations.  So, users can see what’s being said right now at Philadelphia Airport or the MCI Center in Washington, DC.

A lot of this technology is still in its infancy.  But, its powerful to see what’s being said right now at popular places – and as time goes on – expect  these types of technologies to take added prominence in the social networking world.  Today is about who is at a given place.  Tomorrow will be about what’s being said right now by people at popular places across the world.
