Levitation Photography by Karim Aboukelila

Levitation is said to be some sort of skill that allows human to float in the air and yes, nobody did that successfully until now. However, it’s an interesting concept that has been played out in many movies to impress people, thus attracting photographers to produce their own fantastic work of levitation.

Like an adventurous journey, enjoying and experiencing every new surrounding without knowing where will be my next visit, I look back seeing each step taken was necessary to get where I am today. Feeling free due to the fact that the only regularity is that there is randomness all over. In every direction I look there is visible beauty and ethereal inspiration to create my own way. Each new step brings me to another amazing sumptuous place, allowing me to live the moment, learning and creating the road…my road…a constant journey without a final destination.

Today, looking at my work, I wonder how it seems to be so far from the beginning, the thoughts, the shapes and the perspective, not regular but not random, always something in between.

I consider the real beginning of my artistic journey to be in 2008, when I chose to study Mural Painting. However it is not the way I’m heading now, it was my journey’s departure place, the thoughts that lightened my way.

I started my study at the Faculty of Fine Arts in 2005 and I spent the first three years improving my skills, learning new techniques and bit by bit moving myself away from the concept.

During my search how to continue my journey, I studied different mediums, like Modern Mosaic – Techniques, Stained Glass, Fresco, Tempera and Painting with Modern Mediums. Mosaic was my favourite which led me in a state of regularity during the years 2009 and 2010. This state was undoubtedly obvious in my graduation project ‘Maritime’.

In 2010 I found my way in photography which showed so much randomness in my work, with Liquid Sculpture as my choice to get into and discovering what I can reach. After a while I started to get excellent control on the technique itself so that I could produce the shapes that I wanted.

During the years of discovering the concept of ‘Regularity and Randomness’, my two separate roads, began to be two close side roads: ‘Mosaic and Photography’. I started combining the two mediums into one art project in 2013 called ‘Mosaic Alive’, an innovative view on mosaic on which I am still working.

The freedom of no limited concept or technique, inspires and motivates me to keep creating new steps of my adventurous journey in this world of splendid beauty.
